Although there are terrific new releases in all categories this week, the out and out winner in terms of demand is a book written for kids (but enjoyed by people of all ages, yours truly included). Read on to find out about this and more.
- Rick Riordan's five book Percy Jackson and the Olympians was such a popular series that he brought Percy and the gang back for another set of adventures; The House of Hades is the fourth book in the Heroes of Olympus series. These books are smart, funny, and action-packed.
- The Circle is Dave Eggers discomfiting novel about social media's growing role in our lives. Although it is on the surface a sunnier, brighter novel, comparisons with Orwell's 1984 are apt. At the very least, after reading The Circle you will always pause before automatically clicking "like" on Facebook...
- More than a decade since she was rescued from a nine-month-long captivity Elizabeth Smart has written a memoir, My Story. In it she details the hell of her experience, the role of faith in her survival, and how she's rebuilt her life in the years since.
- Cult favorite Chuck Palahniuk's Doomed continues the story of Madison Spencer, "the liveliest and snarkiest dead girl in the universe" begun in Damned.
- Bleeding Edge, in which Thomas Pynchon takes on the dotcom bust of 2000, 9/11, and more. Gorgeous!
- The erudite Bill Bryson narrows his focus to examine one season in one year in the history of the U.S. in One Summer: America , 1927.
- The Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 2. Wow, this one is big!
- From Norvelt to Nowhere is Jack Gantos' follow-up to his Newbery-winning novel Dead End in Norvelt. In it, that Gantos boy heads off on an adventure with his old friend Miss Volker. Fun for all ages, and a great choice for reluctant readers.
