Great White Shark Bites Sea Lion in Half

The aftermath of the great white shark's attack on the sea lion off the Palos Verdes Peninsula was witnessed by a boat based in Long Beach.

A great white shark bit a sea lion in half off the Palos Verdes Peninsula on Monday afternoon, and a boat from Long Beach-based Harbor Breeze Cruises was there to see the aftermath, Pete Thomas reported on his website.

The Triumphant and its crew spotted the shark in 300 feet of water off Trump National Golf Course just after the attack took place, Thomas reported.

"This shark cut a 200-pound sea lion in half with one bite," Capt. Danny Salas told Thomas. "It was very colorful."

Salas also said the shark bit off pieces of the sea lion and circled around the boat.

Sea lions and other pinnipeds are the preferred meal for great white sharks.
