Sonia is the Editor of South Pasadena Patch. She grew up in the San Gabriel Valley and began her journalism career nine years ago as a print reporter for community newspapers in Colorado. Yes, it's true she once wrote a front-page story about a moose sighting in a suburban Denver backyard.

A self-appointed videographer at family reunions, Sonia later realized she could put her video skills to better use. So, she combined her passion for film with journalism. She worked as an associate online producer at the PBS international documentary program Frontline/World and recently worked for NBC News in New York City, where she reported video stories for Nightly News Online and msnbc.com.

Sonia has produced, filmed, and edited video stories for the New York Times, GlobalPost, PBS NewsHour, Time.com, the Wall Street Journal, and PBS Frontline/World from the U.S., Japan, and India.

Sonia received a Master's Degree in journalism from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. She graduated from Amherst College with an undergraduate degree in English Literature, a major she chose after two years of pre-med classes.

Beliefs: At Patch, we promise always to report the facts as objectively as possible and otherwise adhere to the principles of good journalism. However, we also acknowledge that true impartiality is impossible because human beings have beliefs. So in the spirit of simple honesty, our policy is to encourage our editors to reveal their beliefs to the extent they feel comfortable. This disclosure is not a license for you to inject your beliefs into stories or to dictate coverage according to them. In fact, the intent is the opposite: we hope that the knowledge that your beliefs are on the record will cause you to be ever mindful to write, report and edit in a fair, balanced way. And if you ever see evidence that we failed in this mission, please let us know.

Politics

How would you describe your political beliefs?

I'm fairly liberal, especially when it comes to social issues.

Local Hot-Button Issues

What do you think are the most important issues facing the community?

Transparency in local government, development, historic preservation, and transportation projects.

Where do you stand on each of these issues?

South Pasadena is a city that values its small-town feel, and as South Pas continues to develop, local residents and city leaders continue to focus on preserving the community's historic environment, whether it's through careful planning and zoning or resistance to a proposed 710 freeway tunnel.

Also, in the months leading up to the recent appointment of a new Police Chief, many South Pasadena residents began to question their local government's transparency. How will city officials address the concerns of citizens who believe important decisions were made behind closed doors?
