The ACA is unsustainable so it will die. The only question is how long and how much pain will beRead More inflicted before that death. The Euro is a great case study on the lengths politicans will go to prop up an unsustainable political experiment. The EU is inflicting great pain and damage to protect their collective egos, and job security, that is tied to the Euro. And the Dems will behave similarly re O'GolferCare.

Employer costs have been increasing every year anyway. It's called escalation, and anyone whoRead More sources insurance for their own company is aware of it. I think most people conflate "what was happening anyway" with "effects of Obamacare," but there is enough information on the internet about trends prior to 2009 to detail the original insurance problem. .....Personally, Obamacare is helping my business by opening up the insurance marketplace. In FY2008, I insured 3 employees (1 family, 2 single) through BCBS for about $3700/month. Escalation was quoted at 19% for FY2009 - an increase of $700/month. We hired an HR firm (or PEO) to access a group rates and paid 5-7% escalation 2009-2014. In preparation for FY2015, new insurance options have enabled us to drop the PEO altogether and choose a small-biz plan for a smaller monthly premium than our 2010 group rates. This is a tremendous benefit because it opens up options with fringe and retirement contributions to my employees. Deductibles and network coverage are too similar to impact any participants. Outside of my own experience, most people that I know who deal with insurance budgeting for their companies or families have reversed their opinion on Obamacare - once they had to put their money where their mouth is.

ALL cops are animals! Military training that brainwashes them to shoot first and kill the enemyRead More (that is the rest of us). Nothing more than cowards and pussies with full body armor. Nothing but trained killers with badges who will empty their clips into you for no reason at all and have absolutely no remorse! Disgusting what we have allowed our police departments to become. Those cops should have been charged with attempted homicide and thrown in jail. They should be saddled to pay back the $1.8M award to the city and they shouldn't be allowed to work in law enforcement of any type - not even a mall cop. But of course chances are they are both still on duty - barely sanctioned for almost killing 2 people. Oh hum - just another day at work.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is making a pitch to have the 2024 Olympics in Los Angeles.
ManBchMom July 25, 2014 at 07:53 am
Absolutely LA should host again! The 1984 Olympics in LA were spectacular, AND PROFITABLE! If LARead More follows the model created by Peter Ueberroth in '84 by not building new facilities and using existing facilities only (with upgrades where needed) hosting the games again would be great for LA. The traffic was not noticeablely affected since the venues were spread out throughout the southland, scheduled properly, and the fleet of buses to bring spectators to the events worked like a charm. The entire city came together and rallied around the Olympics.
Fedra Tamaddon July 25, 2014 at 10:05 am
Yes! that would be wonderful for the city
South Bay Resident July 25, 2014 at 10:13 am
Why? The Olympics is a scam. Everyone knows that. I wonder how many poor people and homeless peopleRead More will suffer if the Summer Olympics is hosted here? Will the mayor round up the homeless from the streets of Los Angeles and ship them all off to Phoenix and Tuscon again? A good way to piss off the mayors of Phoenix and Tucson and their citizens. Wouldn't it be weird if the money used from taxpayers to subsidize the Olympics were instead used to create housing for the houseless? Hmmm...that WOULD be interesting indeed! A dream of course. Oh well...capitalism is far more important...isn't it? We host the Olympics here in Los Angeles, and the police state here will be enormous. Hell, you couldn't even get into downtown L.A. during the Democratic Convention when it was hosted here. I never saw so many deputy sheriffs and police officers and National Guardsmen in my life. All for a corporatized, fake, two-party system that monopolizes the so-called "democratic?" system that clearly doesn't actually exist in this country anyway. Democratic Republic...HA! Boycott the Olympics!

The best action one can take to greatly reduce one's water footprint at the individual level is toRead More adopt a plant-based diet. By far, animal agriculture uses the most water in California. Taking shorter showers and adopting other actions to save water is great, don't get me wrong, but a drop in the bucket compared to the water-intensive meat and dairy industries. The world's leading water scientists met at the International Water Institute in Stockholm, and concluded that if we want there to be enough water to meet everyone's needs as our world's population expands to 9 billion and more droughts are predicted, then the world must shift to a plant-based diet. It takes 4000 gallons of water for a day's worth of food for a meat-centered diet, but only 300 gallons for a plant-based/vegan diet. Please think about it and choose water-wise, plant-based foods.

Some good ideas posted above, some really bad. Building a pipeline from the Midwest WOULD NOTRead More address the environmental degradation that is now under way in CA. And let's understand the concept of POSITIVE FEEDBACK mechanisms in environmental/ climate science. Basically, the hotter it gets, the less precip we receive. The less precip we receive, the drier it gets. The drier it gets, the more trees die. The more trees die, the more fires we get. The more fires we get, the hotter it gets and so on and so on . . . The time for action on climate change was 20-30 years ago. CO2 levels are too high now, and half life in the atmosphere is 100 freaking years.

All the while the Calif. State, County and Local Governments are trying to charge more for water,Read More penalize us millions of dollars for not conserving Even More than we already have! And...now they want to add at least one-half million dollars in new homes and units with taxpayer dollars to fund for low income housing in Los Angeles that will contribute considerably to the Water Shortage. Also people with swimming pools (I don't): Actually save on water by not having to water their lawns. The Guilt trips by our Feds/States/Counties and Cities are out of this world crazy.

I'm impressed. People can still willingly admit to waving their fanatic flag of either AmericanRead More political party? Unbelievable. Never mind that representatives and lawmakers of both parties are equally and miserably corrupt, on the take and incompetent. That doesn't seem to matter apparently. Both parties stink and need to be flushed, along with their yelling adherents, down the sewer. We'd all be better off for it. Personally I don't trust one goddamned thing that American politicians or their operatives say. Neither should you.

The whooping cough vaccine. Patch file photo.
Sheri Ellis-Patterson July 21, 2014 at 09:30 am
Many of the studies show that the vaccine isn't as effective as they've been touting. In fact, aRead More huge number of children getting this are children who have been vaccinated. So your statement above that the vaccine "prevents the disease" is not accurate. The parents withholding have done their research and believe the vaccine isn't effective and has serious risk for some children. It's time for the vaccine manufacturers to start making higher quality and safer vaccines.
