Peninsula Students Participate in Raytheon's Engineer Games
Peninsula High students participate in the Raytheon Engineering Games held in Torrance.
Feb. 20-24, Peninsula participated in Raytheon’s 12th annual Engineer Games. Held in Torrance, students tested their math and science skills by solving an engineering task in groups and presenting it to Raytheon experts. Wednesday’s Engineer Games included students from 35 local high schools such as Mira Costa High School, Hope Chapel Academy, Redondo Union High School, as well as high schools in other local cities.
This year's Engineer Games theme was “Discovering Your Hidden Capacity,” which featured the task of creating a capacitor that could be used as a stud-finder. The students capacitors then were tested to see if it were capable of detecting a hidden wooden symbol buried beneath a picture of the Mona Lisa.
All students in the event displayed boundless creativity in designing and implementing practical solutions in real-world problems. Raytheon’s goal for this event was to show students that engineering, while intellectually challenging, can be very rewarding and even fun. It also taught students that a leap from high school math and science to the engineering profession is very achievable.
