Volunteers Needed for Fish Clean Up in Redondo's King Harbor

Heal the Bay says fish must be scooped out of the water quickly.

The nonprofit is calling on volunteers to assist in King Harbor Marina where millions of sardines apparently died due to a lack of oxygen in the water Monday night.

The city closed public access to part of the marina Tuesday and again Wednesday while city and county crews helped the dead fish. The fish kill was up to a foot thick in some places and that the cleanup could take days, authorities said.

The Santa Monica-based Heal the Bay says "an even worse problem" could develop if the dead fish are not cleaned up soon. The sardines are already decomposing and floating to the surface of the water.

The organization is directing volunteers to check in at 655 N. Harbor Dr., where Red Onion used to be located. Coordinators will be at the site until 6 p.m., providing instructions, water, food and sunscreen to volunteers.

"Even a couple hours will make a tremendous difference," the organization said in a statement. "No experience or supplies are required—only enthusiasm."
