Panthers JV Boys Basketball Defeats Palos Verdes, Wins 2nd Bay League Game

The Peninsula Panthers defeat the Palos Verdes Sea Kings for their second Bay League win.

On Tuesday at 3 p.m., the Peninsula Panthers JV Boys Team traveled down to Palos Verdes HS for a Bay League contest. The teams came out for their usual pre-game warm-ups only to find out the no one had apparently informed the referees that the starting time for the game had changed from the usual start time of 4:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. When the game began after the delay of waiting for the officials to arrive everyone in the gym could tell that this was going to be a close, physical contest. Once again the Panthers were significantly out-sized by the Sea Kings, and with the Panthers Kurt Milch getting into early foul trouble the contest looked to be too close to call.

The Panthers came out and attempted to run on the Sea Kings but they were not very successful in doing so. The first quarter ended with the Panthers holding onto a slight 15-8 lead.

The second quarter began and the Sea Kings began to inflict their will on the Panthers in the lane and they outscored the Panthers 12-10 to go into halftime down 25-20. The third quarter began, and not only was the Panther's leading scorer Milch relegated to the bench with four fouls, he was joined shortly thereafter by the second leading scorer Donte Buchanon.

The Panthers struggled initially with their two leaders on the bench, but Junior Fola Saliu decided that he was not going to let this happen. Saliu began to exert his force on the defensive and offensive backboards and quickly took control of both ends of the floor. Saliu was not alone in this effort as he was joined by Sophomore Grey Goodman who followed Saliu's lead and began to snatch rebounds on both ends of the floor.

The third quarter ended with the score in Peninsula's favor 36-33.

The Panthers and the Sea Kings came out in the fourth quarter determined to take it to the other team and they continued to trade baskets. Each team would go on mini runs that would extend the lead only to see the lead diminish shortly thereafter.

In the end, the Panthers escaped with a 52-49 victory and are now 2-1 in the Bay League. The Panthers now face a very tough opponent on Friday 1-18-13 in Mira Costa who will once again be much larger than the Panthers and more physical.

The Panthers were lead by Junior Donte Buchanon with 19 points, Sophomore Grey Goodman who added 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, and Fola Saliu who added 7 points and 9 rebounds.
