Peninsula JV Basketball Opens Up Bay League With Big Victory

Peninsula JV boys basketball begins Bay League play with a big victory against perennial power Redondo Union on the road.

Tuesday night at Redondo Union High School, the Peninsula JV boys basketball team opened up the 2012 Bay League season with a big victory over a very competitive Redondo Union High School team.

Peninsula came out of the gate strong, using an up-tempo style of play and pushed the ball at every opportunity. By halftime, Peninsula was up 34-17.

Peninsula came out strong in the second half and continued with their up-tempo style of play. That, coupled with a pressuring man-to-man defense, put the game away in the fourth quarter with a final score of 75-36.

Peninsula shot an amazing 65 percent from the floor in the second half combined with 55 percent from behind the three point arc to stretch the lead in the second half. Peninsula had balanced scoring and was led by sophomore Donte Buchanan, 18 points; freshman Jason Burr, 13 points; and sophomore Matt Sinsioco, 10 points.

Peninsula is currently 11-3 in the season and 1-0 in the Bay League. The Bay League is a very balanced league this year and the perennial powers of Leuzinger, Mira Costa and Redondo are still the teams to beat. You can never count out West Torrance or Palos Verdes, who are very tough as well. Peninsula hopes to break into the elite teams of the league this year. With a total team effort and constant improvement, this may be an achievable goal for us this season. This is just the first of 10 league games and many things can happen in a season, but it is really nice to start with a win on the road in the Bay League.
