4th of July 2014 on the Palos Verdes Peninsula

Actor G.W. Baily from "Major Crimes" is this year's guest speaker and will receive the 2014 Kenneth T. Norris, Jr. Heritage of Freedom Award.

The Palos Verdes Independence Day Committee will celebrate their fifty-third year of the annual 4th of July Independence Day Celebration on Friday, July 4, beginning at 9:30 a.m. 

The committee is pleased to announce that actor and executive director G.W. Bailey will serve as guest speaker. As part of the celebration, Mr. Bailey will receive the 2014 Kenneth T. Norris, Jr. Heritage of Freedom Award from the Palos Verdes Independence Day Committee.

The award is bestowed each year on an individual who has made a significant national or international contribution to freedom. For 15 years Mr. Bailey has volunteered for the Sunshine Foundation, a non-profit organization that has provided free fun activities for children suffering from cancer. 

Since 2001 he has served as its executive director, helping raise over $3 Million per year to support the organization’s programs. The Sunshine Foundation, a 501(c) (3) charity, answers the dreams of chronically ill, seriously ill, physically challenged and abused children, ages 3-18, whose families cannot fulfill their requests due to the financial strain that child's illness.

Past recipients of the Kenneth T. Norris, Jr. Heritage of Freedom Award have included founder of Homeboy Industries Father Gregory Boyle, former Los Angeles Mayor and former California Secretary for Education Richard J. Riordan, famed film director Frank Capra, science fiction writer Ray Bradbury, movie star Charlton Heston, Olympic athlete Rafer Johnson, acclaimed Los Angeles Times sports columnist Jim Murray and LA Dodgers legend Tommy Lasorda. 

In addition, the 2014 Palos Verdes Independence Day Celebration will honor local residents Patricia Foltz and Gene Roeder, members of Friends of the Library, with the Van Dine Family Americanism Award, given each year to a Peninsula Resident who has contributed in a special Ms. Foltz and Mr. Roeder are being honored for organizing the Library's monthly book sales and the Books for Troops program which sends books to military personnel overseas, the USO and Other activities will feature patriotic music, a decorated bicycle parade for children, an apple-pie contest, and fun family games.

The event is free and open to all guests.
