Jaya Bhumitra was so devastated after losing her sister in a fatal accident in 2009, she gave up many of the things she enjoyed, including running.
But her desire to save animals helped her recover from the grieving. Now, Bhumitra is running this Saturday's Palos Verdes Half Marathon on behalf of the animal rights group Compassion Over Killing.

Nearly 2,000 runners are expected to participate in the half marathon and 5K run and walk this weekend, the Easy Reader previously reported.
The event starts and finishes at Pelican Cove, then follows the coastline through Rancho Palos Verdes and Palos Verdes Estates.
