Watch: Professional Skateboarder Rob Dyrdek Addresses San Pedro Skaters

In light of the recent death of a skater in San Pedro, L.A. City Councilman Joe Buscaino asks pro skater Rob Dyrdek to send a message to skateboarders in the area.

The recent death of a skater in San Pedro has raised concern regarding the safety of skateboarding in local streets, where skaters can reach dangerous speeds, sometimes without the protection of a helmet.

Skater Caleb Daniel Simpson, 15, of Palmdale, on Jan. 28 died of severe injuries he sustained from a spill in the 1500 block of West 14th Street. He was traveling in excess of 40 miles per hour when he reportedly ran into another skater, according to a Daily Breeze report.

Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino spoke to this and another skateboarding death in a video with pro skater Rob Dyrdek. He asked Dyrdek to send a message to other skaters in the area who might be "bombing" city streets.

"You're out there, you want to ride the streets wild," Dyrdek said. "Do it in a safe and legal environment. ... Be smart, have fun, but always do it in a safe spot."

Dyrdek also called on skaters to use helmets.

"Put a helmet on," he said in the video. "Protect yourself."

Rancho Palos Verdes resident Ellen November has championed efforts to bring a skate park to The Hill with the formation of nonprofit Skatepark PV.

She's since pushed for the creation of a local safe place to skate and has helped rally support among residents.

"I wouldn't want my young skater skating in the street," she recently told Internet radio talk show hosts Joe Terry and Jackie Balestra. "It's not safe."

Rancho Palos Verdes is currently working with consultant Mia Lehrer & Associates to look into location possibilities and analysis for both skate and dog parks. City officials plan to schedule workshops to gather feedback on the parks from the community.

An was held in November at Zask Gallery.

Palos Verdes residents can comment on both parks by emailing the Rancho Palos Verdes City Council at cc@rpv.com and the Recreation and Parks Department at parks@rpv.com.
