Video: Surf Fishing Improves

Get the latest fishing information from the Southern California coast in our video update.

This week's video fishing update was shot at Sunset Beach where surf fishing has been excellent. Billy Dang, of Seal Beach, caught eight barred perch and one nice California corbina using clams for bait and making long casts with a 2-ounce sinker.

We were also fortunate to meet John Ferris, of La Mirada. Fishing with sand crabs, Ferris nabbed a large spotfin croaker near 17th Street.

Surf fishing continued to improve in San Clemente, Newport and Laguna Beach, Corona del Mar, as well as Redondo and Hermosa Beach.

Redondo Beach

Besides good surf fishing, the fleet continues to do well. Calico bass and a few white sea bass are being taken on most daily. The Tradition, fishing on Friday evening, took 57 barracuda for only 11 anglers.

Laguna Niguel Lake

Catfish remain the focus of most anglers with best bites in the early mornings and evenings. There's also fair bass fishing as well as lots of bluegill and crappie. The Lake has regular youth fishing clinics so the kids can get a leg up on catching more fish.

Catalina and San Clemente Islands

Anglers are seeing decent yellowtail and good calico bass fishing at San Clemente Island with hit-and-miss white sea bass fishing at Catalina. The calico bass bite at Catalina has also been good.

Morro Bay albacore

Southern California anglers love tuna fishing more than anything. With the tuna a no-show in San Diego so far this year, it may be time to turn our attention to the Central coast where commercial fishermen have been seeing and catching a few albacore.
