Video: Strong SoCal Tuna Bite Continues

Anglers continue to catch tuna along the Southern California coast while the calico bass bite slows. Catch up on this and the latest in other fishing news with Philip Friedman's weekly video.

Fishing slowed over Labor Day weekend for many boats, which is not unusual given the pressure the Southern California area has been experiencing. There also appears to be a significant amount of bluefin tuna in the water so look for better fishing this week.

The three-quarter-day boat San Diego out of Seaforth Sportfishing started catching bluefin tuna as close as 28 miles from San Diego as the tuna schools push closer to U.S. waters. Many of the tuna are in the 15- to 18-pound class, but there is still an occasional yellowtail, yellowfin tuna and dorado in the mix.

Private boater Robert Fisher from Orange was at Catalina Island recently where had trouble getting yellowtail to bite. After deciding to jump over and free-dive, Fisher caught a 27-pounder.
