Video: Anglers Search for Tuna
The bluefin tuna bite remains strong out of San Diego while albacore show in the Central Coast. Watch the video for updates on surf fishing and more.
Anglers have been experiencing an inconsistent tuna bite in San Diego recently. For some, catches are mediocre, while others are catching bluefin tuna in the 12- to 40-pound range.
Sportfishers continue to fish near towed in the waters off Baja California Norte.
Light line has given anglers a big advantage when fishing for tuna. Fifteen-pound test with a 20-pound fluorocarbon leader and a good lively bait results in more catches. There have also been some big schools of yellowfin and bluefin tuna 150 miles southwest of San Diego. Whether this body of fish will move north is still uncertain.

The Central Coast is seeing some tuna, too, as albacore begin to bite again. Morro Bay and surrounding areas are starting to catch a few more longfin tuna. Albacore all but missed Southern California anglers this year, so many are anxious to see a run of the prized tuna no matter where they show up.
There's excellent surf fishing from the Mexican border to the Channel Islands. Corbina, barred perch, halibut and some leopard sharks have also been caught.
