Even as the rain poured down Wednesday afternoon, the Palos Verdes Sea Kings baseball team played four and a half innings against the South High Spartans, and led 10-6, before the game was called due to wet conditions.

Palos Verdes head coach Evan Fujinaga said no decision has been made yet on whether the contest will count as an official game or if the two teams will meet again Thursday to play the last two and a half innings.

A game full of offense, the Sea Kings got off to an early 7-0 lead. The team’s big inning came in the second, when it scored four runs, thanks to two home runs by Bobby Stahel and Chad Mensinger.

Stahel hit a solo-home run to begin the inning, then Mensinger hit a three-run home run just over the fence in right center field.

Yet, the Spartans didn’t give up, even as they took a 10-1 deficit into the fifth inning. Scoring five runs off of starter Matt Smith, thanks in part to two errors by the Sea Kings first and second basemen, the Spartans cut the Sea Kings lead to four runs before the game was called.

“Despite the distraction of the rain, I thought they played pretty well. Towards the end it got a little dicey,” Fujinaga said. “The ball was slippery and the ground was wet, but I thought they dealt with it.”
