Let's Talk Books: Tadpole Edition

Oh, the new kids' books out this week!

In the world of picture books the season so far has been very exciting. Today we'll concentrate on just the titles released this week--otherwise it would be an overlong post--but we'll try to circle back to other recent releases as the days progress.

  • Bobo the Sailor Man is the third book about Bobo, a stuffed monkey; his boy, Willy; and Bobo's nemesis, Willy's big gray cat Earl. In Bobo's newest adventure he and Willy set out exploring. The chance discovery of an abandoned bucket and some water turns them into sailors--but disaster looms! Marc Rosenthal's simple illustrations are eloquent accompaniment to wife Eileen's exciting story.
  • You may know Pete the Cat as a sunny optimist. What a surprise, then, to read the first line of Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses: "Pete the Cat did not feel happy." Whoa! But never fear, Pete quickly learns  how to get a new perspective on things, and soon he's bopping along in his usual cheerful way.
  • Jerry Pinkney retells the familiar story of The Tortoise and the Hare in an almost wordless picture book. As always, the multiple award-winning Pinkney's illustrations are glorious--the expressive faces of the animals perfectly reflect the action (or lack thereof, in the case of the over-confident hare who loafs around killing time while the tortoise soldiers on). You and your little reader both will enjoy reading this one again and again, poring over the illustrations to find details missed in previous readings.
  • Another multiple award-winner, David Wiesner, has also released an almost wordless picture book this week. Mr. Wuffles is a big kitty who's not interested in any of the toys he's given...until he finds one that's actually a tiny alien spaceship. The story that unfolds in pictures alone after Mr. Wuffles's discovery is a weird and wonderful one, and should delight parents as much as kids.
Stop by The Book Frog and let's talk picture books! In addition to the new titles we also have an extensive selection of classic Caldecott winners.
