Students Qualify For National Merit Competition

Dozens of Palos Verdes students score high enough on the PSAT to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Competition.

One hundred 11th graders in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District qualified to compete in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Competition, according to the principals of Palos Verdes and Palos Verdes Peninsula high schools.

Thirty-one juniors at Palos Verdes High School and 69 juniors at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School were among the 50,000 highest-scoring participants of about 1.5 million entrants who took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Of the approximately 50,000 qualifiers, 16,000 will be named semifinalists. Semifinalists will compete for about 8,300 National Merit Scholarships.
