Peninsula High Makes Newsweek's 'Best High Schools' List

The school was ranked No. 60 out of 500 schools selected across the country.

earned one of the top spots in Newsweek's "America's Best High Schools 2011" list, released this week, placing 60th out of 500 schools on the list. 

According to Newsweek's list, the school has a 100 percent graduation rate, with 98 percent of graduating students heading for college. Average SAT scores were listed as 1817.

“This is an honor for the entire kindergarten through 12th grade school community," Peninsula Principal Mitzi Cress said in a statement. "This is a wonderful accomplishment for the teachers, staff, parents and students to be recognized as  No. 60 in the country and 5th in California amongst all public, comprehensive, magnet and charter high schools."

Each school’s score was the product of six components: graduation rate (25 percent), college matriculation rate (25 percent), AP tests taken per graduate (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP/IB/AICE scores (10 percent), and AP courses offered (5 percent).

The top school, ranked at No. 1 by Newsweek, was the School of Science and Engineering Magnet in Dallas, TX. At No. 500 was New Century Technology in Huntsville, AL.
