Parcel Tax Exemption Forms Now Available

People age 65 or older can apply for an exemption to the Measure M parcel tax in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District.

Forms are now available for seniors who wish to obtain an exemption to the Measure M parcel tax on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Measure M, which narrowly passed in 2011, is a $374 annual tax with no sunset date that would bring the school district about $7 million annually. It replaced two parcel taxes that were set to expire in 2013.

There are two forms posted on the website for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District—one for people who will be filing for an exemption for the first time and another for people who filed for exemptions from previous parcel taxes.

To qualify for the exemption, the person must be the owner and occupant of the residence; it must be the person's "primary residence only";  and the person must be age 65 or older as of June 30, 2013.

People who are submitting their first application for the exemption must submit the forms in person at the school district before 4 p.m. on or before May 31. They should bring proof of their date of birth, such as a California driver's license, passport or birth certificate; proof of ownership, like the 2012 annual property tax bill; and proof that the house is their primary residence, such as the most recent bill from Southern California Edison or Southern California Gas.
