Local School Sets Sights on Trash-Free Lunches

Chadwick School will participate in a challenge that promotes trash-free lunch in L.A. County schools.

Students at might start to pack their lunches a little differently now that their school is part of a challenge to reduce trash in cafeterias across L.A. County.

The school is one of a dozen across the county that will participate in the Trash-Free Lunch Challenge, sponsored by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County. The contest was created by nonprofit Grades of Green, which promotes eco-friendly classrooms across the country. 

The challenge's kick-off event is scheduled for Tuesday, with a tour of the Sanitation Districts' materials recycling facility and landfill in Whittier planned for school officials.

As part of the contest, students will learn how to reduce lunch trash whether they bring or buy lunches.

  • In Redondo Beach: Jefferson Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School, Tulita Elementary School, Coast Christian School
  • In El Segundo: Richmond Street Elementary School
  • In Palos Verdes: Chadwick School
  • In Inglewood: Crozier Middle School, Warren Lane Elementary School
  • In Carson: Andrew Carnegie Middle School
  • In Gardena: 135th Street Elementary School
  • In Norwalk: Norwalk High School
  • In Whittier: Trinity Lutheran School

Grades of Green will choose two finalist schools to be evaluated by judges, who will then pick one school to receive a $1,000 education grant.
