Palos Verdes Peninsula Democratic Club will present a program on June 10 that promises to be a very comprehensive discussion about how money is obtained for political purposes and how political parties use that money.

Speakers will discuss “AB 1648- the California Disclose Act” authored by Assembly member Julia Brownley (D-Santa Monica), and coauthored by Assembly member Nathan Fletcher (R-San Diego), and endorsed by the California Clean Money Campaign, as well as numerous other organizations throughout the state. Also being discussed is the “Move to Amend” effort.

John Smith, who is the Southern California organizer for Common Cause from Los Angeles to the Mexico border, is interested in reaching out “to political organizations with similar interests to form coalitions” that support “public funding of elections, expanding voter registration rights, full disclosure of campaign contributions, and amending the Constitution to overturn the Citizens United decision.” He has a long political history, which began when he was a boy by “shaking the hand” of Senator John F. Kennedy at the 1960 Democratic National Convention.

Also on the program is John M. Goodman, who will be representing the California Clean Money Campaign, and whose extensive experience working for Fair Elections for years will add another dimension to the topic. He said they are currently “supporting campaign ad disclosure which we see as a necessary preliminary to getting Fair Elections (and also to getting a US Constitutional Amendment) passed.”

Both speakers will bring videos and printed materials to share.

Please join the Palos Verdes Peninsula Democratic Club.  The PVP Democratic Club June meeting will be Sunday June 10th at 2:30 pm.  The location for this meeting will be the Peninsula Center Library Community Room.   Meetings are open to members and the public.  For more information go to www.pvpdemocrats.org.
