The devastating 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in Japan on Friday, March 11, 2011, was followed by three explosions and fires at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear station on March 12, 14 and 15. The subsequent loss of life and structural damage to buildings, roads and surrounding countryside were difficult to comprehend. A year later we are still faced with what to do about our own local nuclear power plants which are built near fault lines, like San Onofre and Diablo Canyon plants.  “Nuclear energy is too risky, dirty and expensive,” according to Physicians for Social Responsibility, PSR, Los Angeles, yet “the Obama Administration wants to triple the $18.5 billion for new nuclear reactors to $54.5 billion for America’s 2012 Budget. Tax-payers have been paying for up to 80% of the cost of nuclear reactor construction.”

The panel for this forum includes the following speakers:

Dr. Jimmy Hara has served on the PSR-LA Board of Directors since 1981, including service as Chapter President for 15 years and now Vice President.  He is Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Residency Director Emeritus for the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Family Medicine Residency after having served 25 years as Residency Director.  He will detail why he believes that “there is no ‘safe’ level of radiation exposure” and what we need to do about preventing nuclear power plants from being built.

Dr. Brian Rasnow is a Physics Instructor at California State University Channel Islandsand Co-Founder of Etaluma, a privately held Life Sciences company focused on bringing analytical and diagnostic instrumentation to a greater spectrum of users, researchers and small labs.

Ms. R.L. Miller is an Attorney and climate/environmental blogger at www.grist.org.

Each speaker will present a different approach to the nuclear safety issue. You are urged to come and bring your friends who are concerned about this critical issue that can affect our health, safety and future well being for generations to come.
