Occidental College & Campus Visits

As an Independent College Consultant, visiting colleges and universities is one of the many ways I stay informed on the ever changing college admissions process. Last week I toured Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA to get a feel for changes since my last visit, including campus culture, and their admissions process. It was a very good tour considering that the majority of students were gone for the summer session. It was bit difficult to gauge the overall campus culture but I had 2 great tour guides. Since the tour group was small, I was able to ask all the questions that are not addressed on the website and really did get a good feel for the campus. Then to top it off, I got to visit with the admission officer (one to one) and discussed the campus and their admissions process. The admissions officer was very candid and answered all my questions. Just as campus tours are important to my practice, touring should be equally important to any high school student planning to go to college. I teach my clients how to research a college before touring and how to ask the right questions, while documenting the results. The goal is not to fall in love with a college, but more importantly to learn which type campus will be a good fit for the student. The college planning process is all about trying to find numerous colleges that fit the student academically, socially, and financially. Two last points: Occidental College is a gem of a Liberal Arts and Science College located near a big city, but still maintains that small college feel. Lastly, if you wondering how a College Consultant can help your family with the college planning process please call to arrange a free 30 minute consultation.
