You May Have to Drive Slower Soon on Portions of Palos Verdes Drive North

The City Council is set to look at lowering some speed limits.

Speeds along two sections of Palos Verdes Drive North are about to get slower.

Well, at least the speed limit is about to be reduced.

On Tuesday, the Rolling Hills Estates City Council will consider its annual traffic survey of city streets. While 22 segments throughout the city will remain the same, staff is recommending Palos Verdes Drive North between Hawthorne Boulevard and Silver Spur Road and between Silver Spur Road and the northern city limits drop from 40 mph to 35.

Speed limits are set at or below the speed at which 85 percent of the motorists drive, according to the report.

On Oct. 31, 2013, traffic surveyors calculated the 85th percentile driving at 38 mph along Palos Verdes Drive North between Hawthorne Boulevard and Silver Spur Road, according to a traffic report.

The received similar results in the segment between Silver Spur at the northern city limits. Unlike the previous section, which had no accidents in the last three years, this section has had one, the report states.

The council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 4045 Palos Verdes Drive North in Rolling Hills Estates.
