RHE Council OKs Skateboarding Event

The event will feature professional skateboarders, local skate shops, ramps and rails.

Peninsula skateboarders can grind and trick to their heart's content at a new event dedicated to the sport after the Rolling Hills Estates City Council voted Tuesday to approve an event that will showcase professional skateboarders and nearby skate shops.

The "Skate the Hill" session will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 20. at Ernie Howlett Park, 25851 Hawthorne Blvd. in Rolling Hills Estates.

"For four hours kids can come and skate ramps, rails, and grind boxes. We’re going to have pros and local skate shops coming to do demos and hand out lots of cool stuff,” said Ellen November, director of Skatepark PV, which is putting on the event.

Skatepark PV has strongly supported the construction of a skatepark on the Peninsula and is raising money to build one.

Girl Skateboard Company, a well-known skateboarding distributing company based in Torrance, will be at the event along with one of their professional skaters Rick Howard.

Food trucks will also be at the event, including Twist Burgers and a Hawaiian shaved ice truck, November said.

The event will not include any music, said Andy Clark, community services director.

“One of the conditions was that the music being played not be real loud, but [November] has indicated that there will be no music at this event due to licensing problems and other similar problems,” Clark said.
