Dog Beach Ban Not So Popular

Visitors of Rancho Palos Verdes Beach share why they mostly disagree with the Rancho Palos Verdes City Council's decision to rescind the dog beach pilot program.

For years, Rancho Palos Verdes Beach served as the South Bay's unofficial dog beach. That all changed when the a dog beach pilot program, citing safety, environmental issues and a decline in business at , which shares parking with beach goers.

A number of beach visitors voiced disappointment in the decision. Dog waste, for one, seems like a non-issue, they said. Redondo Beach resident Carol Perdue feels there are other factors at play. 

"I think it's about the foot traffic in and through the golf course," Perdue said. "It's all about the money, and it's all about the prestige of the golf course and cutting it back."

The council is considering backing a proposal to turn the former Palos Verdes Landfill, which is owned by Los Angeles County, into a dog park. For now, however, people are still walking their dogs on the beach due to a lack of enforcement.

"I'm sure today it's already illegal, and I've seen plenty of dogs down here," said Rancho Palos Verdes resident Oliver Hazard.
