Council to Discuss Redistricting, Alignment With Northern Coastal Cities

Members of RPV City Council expected to press state's redistricting commission for a north-south district alignment.

As new preliminary district lines begin to form, Rancho Palos Verdes city officials are looking at what makes most sense for the city, which might turn out to be an alignment with northern coastal cities.

During tonight's RPV City Council meeting, Councilman Brian Campbell, along with Councilman Stefan Wolowicz, are expected to propose sending a letter to the California Citizens Redistricting Commission, asking it to consider aligning the city of Rancho Palos Verdes with the northern coastal cities, generally west of the 110 and 405 freeways.

The commission is in charge of drawing new congressional and legislative districts in the state.

With a letter, the city would let the commission know that when it comes to culture, economics and transportation, Rancho Palos Verdes is traditionally aligned north-south, Campbell said.

This type of redistricting would make for a better city, he said, because issues of common concern to RPV typically involve other coastal communities. Campbell said that the last thing the city would want is to be part of a district with which it has little contact or little in common, compared to other cities.

With the letter, the city would be responding to a commission request to educate its members on how cities see themselves in relation to their neighbors.

Preliminary district lines are scheduled for completion sometime in June, with final redistricting in August.
