Council to Discuss Giving Thousands to Peninsula Pool Campaign

The City of Rancho Palos Verdes could contribute up to $80,000 for a new pool at the high school.

The City of Rancho Palos Verdes could contribute up to $80,000 to the Peninsula High School Pool Project, aiding the school's efforts to replace a current deteriorating pool.

Rancho Palos Verdes City Council is scheduled to direct city staff to incorporate a contribution of up to $80,000 to the Palos Verdes Peninsula High School Pool Project in the 2011-12 fiscal year budget at tonight's council meeting.

The Peninsula Pool Project was created to raise awareness about the current 40-year-old pool's condition and collect donations for a new one. The current pool structure is disintegrating, in addition to being too small for the school and riddled with safety concerns, according to Pool Project supporters.

The city's contribution would be subject to the PVPHS Pool Campaign reaching its fundraising goal of $2.1 million; the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District replacing the existing pool rather than renovating it; and the City entering into a joint use agreement with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District to allow the city to provide recreational programming at the new pool.

The "Jackie Prindle Pool" will honor Jaclyn Marie Prindle, a 2003 Peninsula graduate who died in February 2010 at age 24 after experiencing complications from an aortic dissection caused by Marfan’s disease.

PVPUSD approved $1.3 million dollars toward building a new pool. Just over $1.5 million has been dedicated to the pool in total, according to the project's current estimates, with $400,000 still needed.

Tonight's city council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Fred Hesse Community Park.

Tax-deductable contributions for the pool can be made payable to: ABC Pool Project Capital Campaign, Nancy Scott, 19 Aurora Dr., Rolling Hills Estates, 90274.
