Coast Guard to Hold Exercises at Torrance Airport

U.S. Coast Guard personnel from Air Station Los Angeles will be conducting their annual flight crew standardization checks from Monday through Feb. 7.

Many of the air station's MH-64 Dolphin helicopter flights will originate at Torrance Airport, and residents living near the airport can expect to see and hear the helicopters more frequently during the exercises, according to a news release from the Coast Guard.

"In an effort to reduce the frequency of flights near Torrance, multiple airports are being used throughout the Los Angeles area," according to the news release. "The Coast Guard fully recognizes the impacts caused by the noise of the helicopters and is taking all possible steps to keep the flights as short as possible."

The flights will primarily occur between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

An email from Rancho Palos Verdes city staff indicated that there will be 12-15 training exercises, with each involving as many as 20 separate takeoffs and landings.

"The purpose of the flight checks is to test a pilot's ability to handle emergencies like an engine failure and other critical facets of being a military aviator," according to the release.
