Annenberg Backs Out of Rancho Palos Verdes Project

The Annenberg Foundation withdraws its planning applications for the 'Discovery Park' at Lower Point Vicente.

The Annenberg Foundation has pulled out of a controversial project that would have created a community center with a focus on animals at Lower Point Vicente in Rancho Palos Verdes.

The Foundation's Executive Director Leonard Aube on Wednesday sent a letter to Mayor Tom Long announcing plans to withdraw its planning applications for the project.

"Subsequent to Council action the project evolved and improved in response to continuous community feedback and participation," Aube said in the letter. "Notwithstanding the positive developments and sound progress, unforseen delays this past year and changed circumstances related to entitlements compel the Foundation to withdraw its application."

The proposed project at Lower Point Vicente had sparked controversy in the community since its inception as proponents of the plan pointed to new programs and public spaces, and opponents express concern for the preservation of the area's natural beauty.

Aube said at a previous City Council meeting the 26-acre community park with enhanced community access would be a "gift to the community."
