Shark Bites Teen's Paddleboard off Catalina Coast

A 15-year-old's board is bitten several times by a shark Sunday morning off the Catalina Island coast.

A teen paddleboarder's close encounter with a shark this weekend off the Catalina Island coast left her board in bad shape after the shark bit it several times.

The 15-year-old girl, who was not injured, was with other paddleboarders about 200 yards from shore in a remote spot about a mile from the Avalon area when a shark bit her paddleboard Sunday morning.

After the attack, the Los Angeles County Fire Department cautioned those who use the water around the island. The shark encounter is an extremely rare occurrence, the department said in a statement.
