Spark Romance on Valentine's Day, Not a Fire

Think before you plan that romantic candlelit dinner for two on Monday.

Though it's easy to get swept up in the moment, this Valentine's Day it might be better to think before covering your entire home in lit candles to create a romantic atmosphere.

February is the third highest month for home fires, with 14,517 home fire claims (excluding lightning and grease fire claims) from 2006-10, according to State Farm claims data.

State Farm has received more than 500 home fire-related claims during this same five-year period on Valentine's Day alone. Not all of the fires can be attributed to candles, but they still serve as a warning.

Here are some tips to ensure your holiday is fire-free:

  • Never leave a candle unattended.
  • Extinguish all candles before leaving a room or going to sleep.
  • Keep candles away from things that could easily light on fire such as books, clothing and curtains.
  • Place candles on stable surfaces in non-tip holders that grip the candle.
  • Place candles in holders that can’t burn.
  • Use battery-operated flameless candles.

Most importantly, use common sense.
