Small Fishing Boat Slams into Rocks, Critically Injuring One

The boaters radioed the U.S. Coast Guard.

One person was critically injured and three others are in fair condition after their small fishing boat ran into rocks at Santa Catalina Island this morning.

The crash was about 3 a.m., when a small boat hit rocks at Long Point, a lighthouse about halfway between Two Harbors and Avalon on the island's north shore, said Ray Dong, an L.A. County fire dispatcher.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Los Angeles County lifeguards were alerted by radio.

Four boaters, all male, were brought ashore at 3:38 a.m. near 215 Sumner Ave. in Avalon, where they were met by county paramedics.

A county lifeguard boat raced the men 30 miles across the channel to San Pedro as the sun rose. City firefighters met the county boat at the waterfront fire station near the 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro at 6:17 a.m., said Katherine Main of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Paramedics took the four men or boys to an area hospital.
