PVE Police Chief to Retire This Year

Palos Verdes Estates Police Chief Daniel Dreiling will retire sometime in 2012. The city plans to start looking for a new chief in the middle of this year.

After a 31-year career in Palos Verdes Estates law enforcement, Police Chief Daniel Dreiling will retire sometime this year, city officials said last week.

Dreiling has been the city's police chief since 2004 and was awarded the Medal of Valor in 1994. He received the medal for helping subdue a gunman who killed two Palos Verdes Estates police officers in February of that year, according to the Daily Breeze.

Palos Verdes Estates Mayor John Rea said the city was "deeply grateful" to Dreiling for his service.

"The chief will leave behind a police department in which morale is high and in which the community has confidence and trust," Rea said in a statement last week. "We are very fortunate to have a man of his caliber and character serve as police chief."

During his tenure, Dreiling worked to establish the PVE-CARES program, which focuses on helping senior citizens live safely in their homes. He also helped establish the city's Disaster District Plan, which prepares the community for possible natural disasters.
