Palos Verdes Estates Names New Police Chief

The new Palos Verdes Estates police chief will start Oct. 1.

Capt. John Eberhard will take over as the new Palos Verdes Estates police chief beginning this fall, City Manager Judy Smith announced Tuesday.

Eberhard will take over Oct. 1 for interim Police Chief Dan Dreiling, who .

"[Eberhard] knows and loves the community and views the men and women of the as its greatest resource," Smith said during Tuesday's City Council meeting. "He has pledged to continue the community programs and professional work of the department in serving the residents and all others who come in contact with the city. I look forward to working with him."

Eberhard has served 28 years in Palos Verdes Estates law enforcement. He joined the department in 1984 as a jailer and completed the Police Academy in 1986. He was also the 2006 recipient of the city’s Neptune Award, an honor given each year to one employee who embodies exceptional service to residents and staff.

A graduate of , Eberhard received a bachelor's degree in marketing from Pacific Western University.
