Palos Verdes Crime: Bomb Squad Called to Rat Beach

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and Palos Verdes Estates Police Department supplied this information on crime in Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills Estates, Rolling Hills, Westfield and Palos Verdes Estates.

The Palos Verdes Estates Police Department reported the following crimes and arrests in Palos Verdes Estates for the week spanning Jan. 22 through Tuesday. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lomita Station reported the following crimes and arrests in Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates and Westfield for the week spanning Jan. 20 through last Saturday.

Palos Verdes Estates

One person was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Jan. 23, 1:30 p.m.; 300 block of Paseo del Mar
A jogger at Rat Beach reported finding a cylindrical metal object on the beach with the marking "contains phosphorus, contact military or police personnel." Officers, the L.A. County Fire Department and the L.A. County Bomb Squad responded to the scene and determined the device was a marine marker and needed to detonate it.

Jan. 22; 2200 block of Via Cerritos
Someone accessed a victim's personal ATM bank account information and used it to withdraw money from an ATM.

Vandalism

Jan. 23-24; 1600 block of Via Fernandez
Sometime overnight, an unknown person used a small rock to shatter the rear window of a vehicle and then fled the location.

Jan. 27; 1200 block of Via Nogales
Someone used an unknown tool to smash the driver's side mirror of a vehicle and then fled the scene in an unknown direction.

Jan. 27; Intersection of Dalton Road and Via Pacheco
Unknown persons used black spray paint to draw cartoon like characters on the brick wall of a home in the 2100 block of Palos Verdes Drive West and an electrical box belonging to Southern California Edison.

Burglary

Jan. 24; 1500 block of Palos Verdes Drive West
Sometime between 8:15 a.m. and 5:26 p.m., someone gained access to a residence through an unlocked door and took high value jewelry and cash. The person or persons fled the scene undetected.

Jan. 26; 1400 block of Via Coronel
Someone used a tool to disable a lock on the side door of a home and then took property from the residence.

Burglary Attempt

Jan. 24; 2200 block of Via Acalones
Someone entered the secure backyard of a home and made two separate attempts to break the double pane glass on the victim's French doors. The suspect was unable to break both panes of glass and decided to flee the scene instead.

Vehicle Burglary

Jan. 24; 300 block of Paseo del Mar
Between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., someone entered a locked vehicle and took money, two iPhones, gift cards and a credit card. 

Driving Under the Influence

Jan. 26, 3:30 a.m.; 3400 block of Palos Verdes Drive North
During a traffic stop, and officer arrested the driver of the vehicle on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. 

Warrant Arrest

Jan. 26, 8:09 p.m.; 5100 block of Newton Street, Torrance
PVE officers were dispatched to Torrance for a warrant pickup.

Rancho Palos Verdes

One person was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct, one on suspicion of robbery and one person on suspicion of a sex offender failing to register.

Petty Theft

Jan. 21, 4:30 p.m.; 28900 block of Western Avenue
A known suspect described as a 14-17 year old male Hispanic allegedly stole a tip jar containing $19.

Jan. 12-26; Saddle Road
Someone stole garden display propellers from a home.

Residential Burglary

Jan. 22; 28100 block of Hazelridge Drive
Someone shattered the window of a front door of a home and allegedly took diamond stud earrings. The suspect is described as a six-foot tall white male in his mid thirties.

Jan. 22; 5700 block of Wildbriar Drive
An unknown person shattered the sliding glass door of a home and took a laptop, iPad, iPhone and pillow case from the residence.

Jan. 23; 3600 block of Coolheights Drive
Someone broke into a home via an unlocked sliding glass door and took three iPads, two iPad chargers and $200 in cash.

Jan. 25, 10:45 a.m.; Hilltop Circle
An unknown person entered a residence through an unknown means and took a laptop.

Vehicle Burglary

Jan. 23; 30800 block of Hawthorne Boulevard
Someone broke the passenger window of a car and took a purse and credit card.

Jan. 25; 28900 block of Western Avenue
An unknown person smashed the driver's window of a car and took a Prada handbag and credit cards

Grand Theft

Jan. 24; 31200 block of Palos Verdes Drive West
Someone stole a bag along with credit cards and $950 in cash.

Oct. 10 - Jan. 20; Bronco Drive
Sometime between October and January, an unknown person too a diamond and emerald necklace, and Omega watch, a Wheadenhour watch and eight gold bangles.

Theft

Jan. 12-26; Saddle Road
Someone took garden display propellers from a yard.

Jan. 26; 28900 block of Western Avenue
A suspect was arrested after allegedly stealing headphones, a beanie, five ear bud sets, a car charger, men's socks, backpack, clothing and pocket knives. All items were recovered. 

Rolling Hills Estates

One person was arrested on suspicion of petty theft.

Petty Theft

Jan. 23; 27100 block of Silver Spur Road
A suspect was arrested after allegedly taking an iPhone 5. The phone was recovered.

Jan. 26; Club View Lane
An unknown person took inflatable heart decorations from a lawn.

Vehicle Burglary

Jan. 23; Peninsula Center
Someone shattered the rear passenger window of a vehicle and took a Louis Vuitton purse, credit cards, Louis Vuitton makeup bag and gift cards. 

Westfield

No arrests occurred during this period.

Grand Theft

Jan. 5-20; 27300 block of Rainbow Ridge Road
An unknown person or persons took a gold necklace with pendant and a gold necklace with faces etched on it.

Rolling Hills

No crimes or arrests were reported during this period.
