A 36-year-old man who drowned trying to rescue a man and a boy who had been swept by a large wave off the Cabrillo Beach breakwater was identified Wednesday by the coroner's office as George A. Franco of Compton.

Franco drew praise for his attempt to save a 14-year-old boy and 49-year-old man Saturday morning. They were rescued by others, treated and released from a hospital.

Franco was among several people at the jetty, which is shaped like a wall with vertical rock sides.
