  • Look for fresh trees with plenty of green needles that don't easily break.
  • Don't leave trees up for longer than two weeks and keep them away from heat sources like fireplaces and heat vents.
  • Dispose of trees at recycling centers or have them picked up by a community pickup service. For information on tree disposal sites, call 888-CLEAN-LA.
  • Don't use holiday lights that are frayed, have bare spots, gaps in insulation or look excessively worn.
  • Don't leave lights on while unattended.
  • All other decorations should be nonflammable.
  • Keep wrapping paper away from the fireplace.
  • And while it might look festive, don't decorate a tree with lit candles or go near the tree with an open flame.
