Updated: Firefighters Battle RPV Blaze

The fire broke out about 7 p.m. Monday night and no homes were threatened.

A brush fire in Rancho Palos Verdes that grew to about 15.2 acres Monday evening was contained just before midnight after firefighters spent hours battling the blaze.

The fire was fully contained at 11:40 p.m. Monday, said Don Kunitomi, Los Angeles County Fire Department public information officer, on Tuesday morning.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said. Early indications pointed to the possibility of an electrical mishap, with residents reporting in televised interviews that the fire was preceded by a blast and a power outage.

Southern California Edison officials said Tuesday morning that water drops by the fire department ignited lines and caused some power surges in the area. The power flickered at least once in several parts of the Peninsula on Monday night, according to reports on Twitter. Power surges were also reported in Torrance.

Fire crews were still cleaning up at the scene Tuesday morning.
