$1.4M Grant Will Fund More DUI Checkpoints

Officials hope that the increase in DUI checkpoints will reduce the amount of DUI-related fatalities and injuries.

A $1.4 million grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety will help deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department combat DUI-related roadway deaths and injuries, according to a news release from the department.

"Saving lives (and) reducing injuries, traffic collisions and property damage is important work," said Sheriff Lee Baca in the news release. "Every life is a life worth saving, and we will do our utmost to help keep the public safe."

The $1,419,250.37 in funding from the grant will pay for more DUI checkpoints, according to the news release.

"The grant activities will specifically target impaired driving offenders as well as (educate) the public on the dangers of impaired driving through the use of DUI (and) driver's license checkpoints," according to the release.

Last year, nine people were killed and 428 people injured in alcohol- and drug-related crashes in LASD-patrolled areas.
