Peninsula Panthers JV Boys Basketball Team Wins Double Overtime Thriller 77-70

The Peninsula Panthers JV Boys Basketball Team traveled to the Trevor Ariza Tip-off basketball classic at Westchester HS on Monday to take on the mighty Serra Cavaliers. The Peninsula Panthers worked hard and walked away with a 63-55 victory in the first round of the tournament. This meant that the Panthers had earned a contest against the mighty Comets on Wednesday at 6:15 PM. The Comets have 2 teams in the tournament and fresh off a victory over Morningside HS the Comets were looking to continue their winning ways. The game began with both teams feeling tight and many easy and open shots were missed. The Panthers were able to jump out to a 15-13 advantage. The Panthers were fouling at an incredible rate and the Comets were staying in the game by sinking their foul shots. The second quarter was a continuation of the 1st with both teams struggling to find any flow to their games. The Panthers went into half-time holding on to a slim 29-26 lead. The Panthers struggled mightily from the foul line and the Comets were able to knot the score at 40 heading into the final and decisive 4th quarter. The fourth quarter started and the comets jumped out to an 8 point lead and with 3:26 seconds remaining in the contest the Panthers suddenly found their shooting stroke and led by Sophomores Dane Colin and Michael Oh the Panthers were able to knot the score at 56 at the end of regulations. The first overtime saw both teams trade baskets and at the end of the first overtime session the score was still knotted at 67. The 2nd overtime began and the Panthers began to flex their defense will and quickly jumped out to a 6 point lead, then the Panthers lost big man Kyler Tabazadeh and Dane Colin to fouls. Junior Captain Brennan Smith and Sophomore Michael Oh then put the team on their respective backs and made sure that the Panthers ended the game with the victory. The final score was 77-70 and the Panthers and Comets played their hearts out. This was a very exciting game for only the second game of the season and if this is an indication of future contests then the Panthers should have a very interesting season. The Panthers will play next on Friday night against the winner of the Beverly Hills vs. Westchester game at 7:00 PM.
