On May 17, the indie rock quartet known as Atlantic will take the stage for a much anticipated "end of school year" show. Resident PV rock band since its founding last year, Atlantic features the impeccably bearded Phil Iacono on guitar, Franco Staub on bass, Lexi Vega (a girl!) rocking the drums and Taylor Robbins carrying the lead vocals.

Atlantic rarely plays shows on the Hill, despite the fact that three of its four band members attend Peninsula (Taylor Robbins lives in Mission Viejo and attends Capistrano Valley High School). Proposed by Staub as the “last show ever," Atlantic returns to the Rolling Hills by popular demand (they routinely play shows at The Gate in Rancho Santa Margarita) for Don't Let Go: Benefit Concert for Mike Garcia.

They’re used to having the bookings come to them. A far cry from last decade’s (or even last year’s) angst-ridden heavy metal garage band, Atlantic’s members combine current knowledge of the music industry with classical training and outstanding musicianship. And as far as I can tell, they practice in a living room.

Vega, Staub and Iacono have all played in Peninsula’s award-winning Jazz Band; additionally, Vega brings her beats to a church band. Unlike most stereotypical “local” acts, they’re recording artists as well as live performers, presenting high quality, carefully mixed tracks for download on their Facebook and MySpace pages.

Even if the May 17 gig does end up being their Last Show Ever, with the graduating members heading for various corners of the West Coast, their web-wide audio recordings assures the band a foothold in the Internet music scene.

“They’ve definitely got the potential to go somewhere,” an onlooker mused at a recent concert.  “Their sound is already really well-developed.”

Self-labeled Indie Rock, they sound a little bit like Dashboard Confessional, whom they have covered, but aren’t comparisons a little embarrassing? They kind of sound like this really great band called Atlantic.
