Veterans Honored in Ceremonies in Palos Verdes, L.A.

Hundreds gather in Rancho Palos Verdes Monday for Memorial Day ceremonies at Green Hills Memorial Park.

An annual Memorial Day ceremony drew hundreds to Rancho Palos Verdes Monday as people from across the South Bay arrived to honor veterans.

The 27th annual Memorial Day Observance at featured keynote speaker Michael Thornton, a retired Navy SEAL, the Gulf News reported. Thornton was awarded the Medal of Honor for saving the life of a fellow SEAL during the Vietnam War, the Daily Breeze reported.

The observance also included aerial fly-overs, skydivers who displayed American and military flags, a parade that featured all branches of the armed forces, musical performances, 21-gun salute and the release of 100 doves.

Rep. Janice Hahn, D-San Pedro, also spoke at the ceremony and thanked veterans for their service, according to the Breeze report.

Of course the Palos Verdes ceremony wasn't the only one Monday honoring veterans for their service.

Bea Cohen, the oldest female veteran in California at age 102, was honored at the . Actor Jon Voight led the event, followed by speeches by retired Major General James W. Comstock, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Cohen.
