RHE Man's 'Army' Raising Money to Fight Alzheimer's

Rick Burgeno and AJ's Army will participate in the 2013 Walk to End Alzheimer's.

A Rolling Hills Estates man is once again leading the charge to raise money for Alzheimer's disease care, support and research.

RHE resident Rick Burgeno and his AJ's Army team raised $5,400 last year—the highest amount raised by any friends and family team—for the second annual Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's in Long Beach last year. In all, the 2012 walk raised more than $130,000.

This year, the 19-member AJ's Army has raised $2,190, according to the 2013 Walk to End Alzheimer's-Long Beach website. The team hopes to raise $10,000.

"We are overwhelmed by the passion for the cause demonstrated by those in the South Bay," said Alzheimer's Association California Southland Chapter president and CEO Susan Galeas in a news release. "Their commitment to fighting Alzhemier's disease through the Walk is heartwarming and reinforces the growing need that exists in our communities."

The 2013 Walk to End Alzheimer's will take place Oct. 19 at Rainbow Lagoon Park in Long Beach.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, "funds raised at the Walk provide much needed care and support for people touched by the disease throughout Los Angeles County, enable efforts to educate the public about Alzheimer's as a growing public health threat, and fund research to fight Alzheimer's disease."
