This Weekend Guide is sent out every Thursday morning and features just a few of the upcoming events and activities I feel deserve your attention. There are other ongoing events that may not be mentioned here due to space and time constraints. Vanguard Surf & Skate is hosting the much anticipated video premiere of Almost 5 Incher on Friday, June 1. This free premier gets under way at 7:30 p.m. and everyone is welcome to attend. Starlite Cinemas will work movie magic and convert the Vanguard parking lot into an outdoor theater. The video features a collection of pro skaters and Vanguard Team rider, Issey Yumiba, has a part in the video as well. There will be a raffle, product giveaways and a DJ spinning the hottest tunes. Wee Man’s Chronic Tacos—a South Bay favorite!—will be on site dishing out great meal deals. Keen Ramps is setting up a small skate area so be sure to bring your skateboards. As always, all skaters must sign a waiver. The event takes place at Vanguard Surf & Skate, located at 5205 Pacific Coast Hwy. in Torrance. Join Beach Cities Friends as they host a Texas Hold-Em Poker Tournament to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles on Friday, June 1. Beach Cities Friends works to raise awareness and funds for HFH with their mission being to eliminate substandard housing by making homeownership possible. They host two or three fundraising events each year to accomplish this goal. The Texas Hold-Em Tournament takes place at The Lakes located at 400 S. Sepulveda Blvd. in El Segundo from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.. The doors open at 6:00 p.m. and lessons are offered at 6:30. The tournament begins at 7:00 with a buy-in of $200. Late arrivals will be seated until 8:20. Hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served with prizes for the top four players. Since Beach Cities Friends began their partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater LA, they’ve funded nine homes—the most recent being a home completed last year in Lawndale. This tournament is a great opportunity to win prize money—and bragging rights—while supporting an organization dedicated to building decent, affordable, sustainable homes for hardworking families and individuals. In coordination with the City of Torrance centennial, the Riviera Garden Club is sponsoring a tour of historic homes in Hollywood Riviera on Friday, June 1, and Saturday, June 2. Seven of the original 35 homes of the 1920s Hollywood Riviera development will be open to the public for self-guided tours from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Discover the history of Hollywood Riviera, the fascinating stories behind these prominent homes, the architects who designed them and some of the famous residents. The Hospitality House will feature light refreshments, educational demonstrations and a video of the Riviera’s history. Advanced tickets are $35 and $40 on tour days. The last time these homes were open for tours was 35 years ago. This may be a once in a lifetime opportunity. ‘’ is back! Every Friday night through October, vintage automobiles are on display in the parking lot from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their hot rods, street rods and muscle cars and strut their stuff. The evening also features trivia, trophies and raffle. Ruby’s Diner is located at 245 N. Harbor Drive in Redondo Beach. Take a stroll through the parking lot and marvel at this fine collection of classic automobiles. If you wish to display a car or require more information, contact Larry Neville at 310-962-7438.

The Manhattan Beach Business and Professional Association hosts First Fridays—an extended showcase of all that is cool, stylish and fabulous in Downtown Manhattan Beach—Friday, June 1. The monthly event features special offers, discounts, music, giveaways and other fun things to do. Select stores, restaurants and businesses below Valley Drive, west to the pier and surrounding streets, will be participating. The event runs from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Terranea Resort is proud to present Nelson’s Summer Concert Series which kicked off last weekend and runs through Sept. 2. Every Friday and Saturday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., guests will enjoy live music on Nelson’s bluff-side patio overlooking the deep blue. Don’t forget, Triton Mixed Martial Arts Center offers a free Women’s Self Defense Class every Monday morning at their training facility in on Harbor Drive. This very valuable service is available free for women of every age and you don’t have to be a member of Gold’s or Triton to participate. Just check in at the front desk.
