Sea Lion Freed at White Point Beach

The Marine Mammal Care Center releases an adult male sea lion into the wild near Palos Verdes.

Less than a month after the arrival of a lethargic, underweight male California sea lion at the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro, the sea lion's caretakers released it into the wild.

The sea lion, which arrived at the MMCC on Oct. 12, was returned to the wild Friday at White Point Beach on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, according to a post on the MMCC Facebook page.

Upon its arrival, the sea lion weighed only 279 pounds, according to the MMCC. He weighed about 429 pounds upon its release.

Fully grown adult male California sea lions weigh around 770 pounds, according to the NOAA Fisheries.
