Vaughan Williams' Dona nobis pacem. Mar 23, 3 pm at St John Fisher Church

Spring/Lenten Concert - V. Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem

Dona nobis pacem, (in English: Grant us peace), is a cantata for
chorus, soloists, and orchestra, completed by R. Vaughan Williams in 1936. This
plea for peace refers to several recent wars during a time fears of a new one
were growing. His texts are taken from the Mass, poems by Walt Whitman, a
political speech, and sections of the Bible. Haunting images emerge from the
music: a dirge for a father and son, "dropped together", being
marched in a "sad procession" to their "new-made double
grave", overlooked by the "immense and silent moon", and lead to
notes of hope as the chorus swells, as if to say that we learned from the
carnage of World War I. The 6th and final movement continues with
optimistic texts, including a brief setting of the Gloria in English, and it
ends with a quiet soloist’s Dona nobis pacem, adding the choir to
finish.
