Groundbreaking at Peck Park for Skatepark

LA City Councilman Joe Buscaino was among a group of officials and supporters who used golden shovels to break ground for the newest skatepark in LA City. It will be the city's 22nd skatepark. Andy Harris, founder of Channel Street skatepark spoke and received a commendation from the LA City Recreation Department for all his dedication and work. Owner of California Skateparks, Joe Ciaglia was present. His company will be constructing the park which will include a seven foot pool. The park will be on the west side of the park, bordering on Western Avenue.

Councilman Buscaino referred to skateboarders as 'skater-athletes' and is fully in support of the extremely popular sport of skateboarding. His main concern is for the safety of skaters. In March, San Pedro will be sponsoring a large downhill skate event. He reminisced about the 1970's when the California drought had people emptying their concrete swimming pools and skaters began skating the pools. Southern California is the birthplace of skateboarding as we know it today and Buscaino is proud for his district to host another park.

Following the groundbreaking with golden shovels, the hundreds of attendees moved to the east side of the park for food, music and skating. Over thirty volunteers were present serving up hot dogs, chips and drinks, all free to the attendees. A half pipe was set up and local rock bands played all afternoon.
