Amelia Urwin, of Palos Verdes Estates, has recently been named Miss Palos Verdes Teen Achieve at the Teen Achieve pageant in Southern California held on Sept. 29. As first runner-up in the state pageant, she also has the title of Miss Regional California Teen Achieve.
Amelia has been involved with pageants for the past two years. In 2011, at the National American Miss pageant, she placed for the title of Miss Spirit, an award given to the girl with the most uplifting spirit and positive attitude. At the 2012 pageant, she was a top-five finalist for the Spokesmodel competition, and will be competing in November for a national title. National American Miss is the largest “natural” pageant program in the United States, emphasizing interview and personal presentation skills.
A senior at Palos Verdes High School, Amelia is a member of the National English Honor Society and the French Club, and is also a member of the Palos Verdes Assembly. She studies dance at the Peninsula School of the Performing Arts, where she a founding member of the Visual Kapture Dance Company (VKDC), led by artistic director Vanja Katrinov. This year, her team won Platinum First Place in California, then Gold First Place at the national competition of Showstoppers International.
Amelia has chosen as her personal platform raising awareness of Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), which is a cancer of the bone marrow. She lost her friend Emily Kass to the disease, and has made it her goal to spread awareness and encourage others to sign up for the bone marrow registry.
