Weekend: Peninsula Music Promenade, Triathlon

This weekend in the South Bay there's sustainable gardening classes, a food fest on the pier, triathlon on the beach and local band performances.

Here's a roundup of events happening this weekend:

Peninsula Music Promenade

Where and when: South Coast Botanic Garden from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Chadwick School from 2:30-6:15 p.m.

Why go: Spend Sunday listening to award-winning high school and jazz pep bands. The event will also feature classical artists Dennis McNeil, Wojciech Kocyan and Esther Keel, ethnic performances by Persian santur Max Sadeghi and the Firebird Balalaika Quartet and String Quartets. Presented by the Peninsula Committee Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Sustainable gardening practices class

Where and when: 1236 N. Peck Ave., Manhattan Beach; Saturday, 10 a.m.

Why go: The Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden will host this free weekly class featuring tips on sustainable gardening skills. This week is all about composting.

Price: Free

2ND annual Taste of the Pier

Where and when: Redondo Beach Pier, 100 Fishermans Wharf, Redondo Beach; Saturday-Sunday, noon

Why go: The event will feature food from local restaurants, as well as strolling entertainers and live jazz and blues from KJAZZ 88.1 FM.

Price: Free admittance; tasting tickets are $1 each.

Honey Island Swamp Band

Where and when: Saint Rocke, 142 Pacific Coast Hwy., Hermosa Beach; Saturday, 8 p.m.

Why go: The Southern rock/roots/jazz hybrid band will perform Saturday night.

Price: $10

‘Day at the Beach' triathlon

Where and when: Hermosa Beach Pier, 1 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach; Sunday, 7 a.m.

Why go: “Day at the Beach” features a fun, safe, beginner-oriented course.

Price: $185 to participate; free to observe.

2ND Sunday Drum Circle

Where and when: Torrance Beach, 402 Paseo de la Playa, Redondo Beach; Sunday, 1 p.m.

Why go: Head down to the beach and partake in this monthly drum circle. There’s drums and percussion instruments to share or bring your own. All ages welcome.
